Copyediting

Copyediting includes checking and correcting your manuscript for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other mechanics of style in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition; the Christian Writer's Manual of Style, 4th edition; and Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 11th editiion (online version). I also perform light fact-checking.

E-book Formatting

E-book manuscript formatting includes cleaning up an edited and proofread file (changing straight apostrophes to "smart," or curly, apostrophes, for example), removing hidden bad HTML code and inserting correct HTML code, applying the proper styles, and tailoring the manuscript to the requirements of the desired retail outlet (EPUB, KDP, MOBI, etc.).

Line Editing

Line editing consists of checking and correcting your manuscript for errors in word choice, clarity, syntax, logic, consistency, word repetition, and other mechanics of style. When line editing, I also examine sentence structure, remove clichés, and ensure the copy flows smoothly and logically—all in addition to the checks performed in copyediting.

Localization

Localization is the adaptation of a file, product, or service to a target population by fine-tuning spelling, idioms, expressions of time, and other . A localized text will look, feel, and/or sound as if it had been produced within that population. One example would be changing "colour" to "color" for US English. At this time, I offer BrEng → USEng localization only.

Proofreading

Proofreading, the final step before printing/publication, takes place after the copy has been flowed onto the page via InDesign or similar software. Typically performed in Adobe Acrobat (in a PDF), proofreading points out stacks and ladders, widows and orphans, wrong captions on illustrations, wrong headers/footers, and misaligned text/images. It also includes a final sweep for glaring errors in the copy.
